American whiskey is produced in the United States from a fermented mash of cereal grains. Depending on the type of whiskey, the mash has to contain minimum amounts of rye, corn, barley, wheat or other grains.
There is an interesting interaction between the American and Scotch whisky industries: American whiskey has to be matured in new oak casks, which are then shipped to Scotland, where the law requires used casks.
