Aberlour 33 Years (Whisky Sponge)

Aberlour 33 Years (Whisky Sponge)

We’re back at Decadent Drinks, with one of the last Whisky Sponge releases. Multivintage Aberlour: a combination of 1989 and 1991 casks.

Aberlour 33 yo 1989 + 1991 (49,7%, Decadent Drinks 2024, refill hogsheads, 295 btl.)

Nose: nice waxy notes up front, with hints of almond and peach. Subtle chalky touches, crushed mint leaves, sunflower oil and white clover. Hints of pollen. The fruits are certainly present but it is mostly a green profile, with drops of ACE juice. Really nice.

Mouth: complex. Again not a fruit bomb in any way – slightly peculiar in that respect. Instead we have great waxy notes, walnuts, a few bitter drops and hints of resins. Hints of verbena, a mineral grittiness and lots of wildflowers. Juniper and other botanicals. Always balancing austerity and rounder notes.

Finish: long and elegant, with a restrained sweetness, hints of ale and dried herbs.

Aberlour is one of these malts that don’t have an exuberant fruitiness, and that’s exactly what we’re getting here. Overall a beautifully different whisky with high complexity. Available from Decadent Drinks, or partners like TyndrumWhisky and The Whisky Exchange for instance.
