Daftmill 2008 Winter

Daftmill 2008 Winter

We’re back at the young farm distillery Daftmill. With just about 100 casks filled each year, this distillery remains hard to get. And it remains pricey. In our glass today is the Daftmill 2008 Winter release.

Datfmill 2008 ‘Winter Batch release’ (46%, OB 2020, first-fill bourbon barrels, 6000 btl.)

Nose: bright and sweet, fairly typical ex-bourbon aromas. Pineapples and bananas, candied ginger, hints of vanilla custard and stewed peaches. Also hints of beeswax. Panettone. Candied lime peel. Cardamom ice cream (love that). A slightly fragrant woody note too, including a whiff of glue.

Mouth: more banana sweetness and creamy vanilla, with hints of lemon sherbet and mango syrup. Muscovado sugar and praline, with vanilla cake and sugared almond. Touches of caramel and dusty oak spice towards the end.

Finish: quite long, still sweet and pastry-like, with a light waxy and grassy note.

I like this sweet and slightly waxy style, probably the result of good, active wood. Overall a slightly more mundane expression from Daftmill. Sold out in the UK but still arriving in shops across the pond. Often at a premium though and I’m not sure the pricing is entirely justified. TWE is also offering samples.
