Some of the 20th Anniversary bottlings from The Whisky Exchange seem to have stayed under the radar for a while, like this Glen Scotia 2007 single cask. It’s surprisingly good though, and affordable.
Glen Scotia 12 yo 2007 ‘Grand Tour single cask’ (54,6%, OB for The Whisky Exchange 2019, first-fill bourbon cask #204, 209 btl.)
Nose: dry and slightly mossy at first. Bay leaf. After a while it becomes surprisingly fruity, with waxed lemons and green banana. Subtle vanilla cake. Hints of chamois leather. Wet pebblestones and petrichor. Greasy engines. Diesel fumes as well. Really complex, funky and seductive.
Mouth: intense, quite medicinal, mixing herbal notes, a little oak char, paraffin and coastal notes. Salty anchovies. Hints of tar. Light grassy notes and pepper. There’s a vague sweetness and a hint of coffee underneath.
Finish: long, peppery, still quite medicinal, with menthol, lime and herbal tea.
Very complex and very entertaining, this is pretty great! It goes in different directions: not a beginners dram, but hats off to this characterful composition. Only from The Whisky Exchange (also samples available if you like).
Score: 88/100
