Recently The Whisky Exchange and their buyer Dawn Davies MW presented their own rum classification. Rum is a very versatile drink with lots of different styles and production methods, making it difficult to communicate about rum as a retailer, and difficult to find your preferred style as a consumer.
So here’s a new TWE exclusive bottling: Foursquare Hereditas 14 Year Old produced in Barbados. It is a blend of pot- and column-distilled rum, making it a Single Traditional Blended rum in the new classification. Part of the parcel was matured entirely in bourbon-casks, the rest was given 10 years in bourbon and 4 years in sherry casks.

Foursquare Hereditas 14 yo (OB ‘Private Cask Selection’ for TWE 2019, blended rum, bourbon + sherry cask, 2520 btl.)Nose: oh yes, similar to a very aromatic, juicy sherry cask. Bananas flambéed with toffee notes alongside raspberry jam and blackberries. Light coconut, hints of sour pineapple. There’s also a nice Oloroso theme, with tobacco and light meaty notes. Hints of gentle oak char too.
Mouth: really thick with a nice dry and sweet balance, now closer to bourbon whisky (leather, mint, brown sugar). Poached pears, still this sour pineapple and plenty of berries and raisins. Treacle and liquorice. Firm spices in the background (cinnamon and aniseed).
Finish: long, with intense dried fruits, liquorice, mint and some earthy oak.
A rich and intense rum, even more impressive with the whole sherry theme. This can rival a sherry matured single malt whisky so this comes highly recommended for whisky lovers looking for a nice rum. Reasonably priced, only available from The Whisky Exchange.
