To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Port Askaig series (check out my first post about Port Askaig), Elixir Distillers has bottled this Port Askaig 10 Year Old ‘10th Anniversary Edition’.
It comes from 25% first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, 60% refill hogsheads and 15% ex-solera sherry butts, all selected from a distillery close to the village of Port Askaig on Islay. It is bottled at a generous 55.85% ABV, the geographical latitude of the port…
Port Askaig 10 yo ‘10th Anniversary Edition’ (55,85%, Elixir Distillers 2019, 10.000 btl.)
Nose: a great combination of sweetness and coastal smoke. There’s sweet lemon, a hint of peaches and generous honey. Light vanilla and hints of cake batter. Candied ginger. Then coal fire and lacquered barbecue meat, as well as brine and touches of antiseptic. Wet wool. Classic nose.
Mouth: sweet, oily and intensely maritime. Nice citrus notes, freshly cut green apples, a little buttery sweetness, almonds and honey too. A touch of roasted pineapple. Then a hint of coffee and salty marzipan. A light peppery heat. Plenty of ashes, smoked mackerel and hints of olive oil.
Finish: long, very ashy, with hints of burnt herbs, pepper and a light citrusy sweetness.
Really good, this combination of fruity sweetness and big, intense peat smoke. A worthy anniversary dram. Worth checking out. Available from The Whisky Exchange of course.
Score: 89/100
