Here’s a brand-new Clynelish 21 Year Old from That Boutique-y Whisky Company. We can assume this is from the 1997-ish period, rather excellent years for this distillery.
Clynelish 21 yo (47,8%, That Boutique-y Whisky Co 2018, Batch #7, 1174 btl.)
Nose: classic paraffin and candle wax, with a very nice and slightly more exuberant fruitiness than we expected. Kiwi, gooseberries and tinned pineapple. Hints of creamy banana desserts. Soft grassy notes and chalk underneath. Pretty excellent.
Mouth: slightly more mineral now. Albariño. Pears, green apples and hints of almond milk. Then more towards grapefruit, very light salty touches and chalk. Wee herbal notes and heather.
Finish: quite long, with citrus zest, a slight oaky note, green tea and a lightly bitter waxiness.
I’ve been looking into Clynelish 1997 since indie bottlers brought them to our attention (2011 or so) and this is the same high quality as ever. Available from Master of Malt.
Score: 90/100
