Bunnahabhain 11 Years // Ledaig 12 Years (G&M Discovery)

This Bunnahabhain 11 Year Old and Ledaig 12 Year Old are part of the August 2018 release in the Gordon & MacPhail Discovery range.

A purple colour indicates a sherried dram, the grey colour means it’s peated. The Ledaig is a combination of bourbon and sherry casks.

 

 

Bunnahabhain 11 yo (43%, Gordon & MacPhail Discovery 2018)

Nose: starts on buttery notes, earthy leather and some damp, leafy notes. Not entirely fresh. Oranges and cloves. Caramel sweets. Hints of limestone and smoke. Leather too.

Mouth: mocha glazed biscuits, vanilla and rum soaked raisins. Roasted hazelnuts. Smoked lemons. Lots of barley notes as well, fading on dry spices.

Finish: medium, on nuts, caramel and leafy notes.

Strictly nothing to complain about, but I’m not too fond of the caramel coated maltiness and heavy spices. Decent value but I’ve seen better Bunnas and better Discovery releases. Around € 55 from Master of Malt.

Ledaig 12 yo (43%, Gordon & MacPhail Discovery 2018)

Nose: very coastal, showing seaweed, a salt & lemon combination, mercurochrome and dry peat. Big hints of cured meat, as well as dry grassy notes. Carbolineum and vinyl flooring. Vanilla biscuits and crème brûlée. Some muddy notes too.

Mouth: peppery smoke with a bright side of lime juice, green banana and grapefruit zest. Brine, a little green tea. Cigarette ashes. A tad simple, and perhaps missing a bit of punch for this kind of profile, but well made.

Finish: long, salty, lemony with lots of ashes.

Plenty of ashy, medicinal notes balanced by citrusy sweetness. This style may need 46% or more to really shine, but certainly good value for money. Around € 55 from Master of Malt.
