This is the latest batch of Glengoyne Cask Strength (as far as I know). It is a combination of first-fill and refill sherry casks.
Glengoyne Cask Strength (58,8%, OB 2015, Batch #4)
Nose: a less intense sherry influence than I expected. Fudge and golden syrup. Stewed plums, apricot pie, in fact lots of pastry notes and oat cookies. Hints of milk chocolate. Orange peel and dried banana too. Hints of pepper.
Mouth: still on the fresh, fruity side of the sherry spectrum, with cinnamon apples and golden raisins. Plenty of spices too – mainly pepper, with a light herbal edge. Bitter oranges. Buttered toast. Of course it’s hot, especially since it seems to lack a little weight somehow. Roast coffee beans.
Finish: long, on cinnamon, dark chocolate and bitter oranges.
It seems different batches of this Glengoyne show quite different characters. This one is fruity and sweet, but somehow it picks up a slight bitterness which I didn’t expect. Overall this doesn’t quite do it for me: more intense sherry please. Around € 55.
