Tomatin 1981 (single cask #001)

Tomatin 1981 cask #001

I believe this was the first release from Tomatin in the heart-shaped bottles (check the more recent Tomatin 36yo 1977) in July 2014. It was after the review of the 1977 that I got a message that suggested me to try this Tomatin 32 Year Old 1981 as well. Thanks, Dirk.

Tomatin 1981 32 Years cask #001Tomatin 32 yo 1981
(42,3%, OB 2014, Oloroso sherry butt #001, 405 btl.)

Nose: quite spectacular. Raisins, almond biscuits, red berries. Loads of old leather chairs and polished exotic woods. Soft hints of liquorice roots. Whiffs of very old Oloroso, including the combination of figs and citrus that they often have. A bit of sour tobacco. Moving towards tangerine and maracuya.

Mouth: quite light, but quickly showing those lovely Tomatin fruits. Passion fruits, hints of tangerine, mango and pink grapefruit. Tropical fruitiness with acidic citrus. The sherry side arrives a bit later: chocolate, plums and light herbal notes.

Finish: relatively long, with some plums, citrus and wood spices.

Superb Tomatin and a lovely mix of sherry notes and the bright fruitiness of Tomatin in the 1970s. I think I prefer this one of the the 1977 that was bottled a bit later. Around € 600-700 and sold out in most places.

Score: 92/100
