Most of the middle-aged Bunnahabhains have been sherry casks lately, but this Bunnahabhain 1991 is from a bourbon cask. It was bottled by TheWhiskyCask, a German shop with an extensive range of private bottlings (whisky as well as rum).

Bunnahabhain 21 yo 1991Nose: starts fruity: melon, apricot and yellow apple. Even a tropical edge and marshmallows. Coated in almond cream with hints of vanilla. Plenty of hay and grasses, later also damp ferns. It also shows a coastal side: sea air, mineral notes. Mint.
Mouth: good attack, the fruity sweetness is still there but it’s overtaken by notes of grapefruit (both juice and zest), green tea and liquorice. Subtle oak as well, and a little salt. Even hints of peat. Very good balance of fruits and sharpness.
Finish: long, grassy and salty. Liquorice and bitter herbs.
A nice bourbon matured Bunnahabhain, switching between fruits and austerity. An entertaining dram. Around € 80.
