Sipper’s Rum is the ‘ongoing’ rum release from The Whisky Jury. This blended rum contains rums up to 20 years old, from 3 parts of the world. The label mentions Jamaica, Asia and Latin America, but the details are kept secret.
Sipper’s Rum wants to be a price-conscious alternative to all the single cask selections, an easy sipper but with the same high standards and a mild ester count. Cocktail material, I hear you think, but it’s probably more than that.
Sipper’s Rum (49%, The Whisky Jury)
Nose: plenty of tinned pineapples at first, with mashed banana, banana ice cream and custard. Also honeyed notes and something of overripe grape. Then slightly brighter notes of citrus, as well as a few well-placed hints of fresh oak shavings. Some Jamaican funk as well (soft glue), but nicely balanced.
Mouth: more banana sweetness and sweet pineapple, but it mixes in funkiness more prominently now. Some green olive, salty liquorice, as well as some fermenting fruits and lightly resinous touches. Rounded hints of vanilla from the cask too.
Finish: a tad short now, with a faint boozy edge. Lemons and olives too.
Jamaica, sure, and perhaps Barbados or Guyana, but other than that I leave it up to you to discover. In any case it’s a very good blending effort, mixing in some esters while keeping it extremely drinkable with an easy fruitiness to it. For the price, this should make an excellent gift (to yourself or someone else, you decide). Easy to find from TWJ’s partner shops.
