After a terrific Red Spot 1991 single cask, The Whisky Exchange secured another exclusive in the Spot series from Mitchell & Son. This whiskey spent 10 years maturing after going into bond in 2013. Unlike the classic Green Spot pot still range, which ages in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, this is a single cask bottling from an ex-bourbon American oak barrel.
Green Spot 10 yo 2013 (56,6%, OB for The Whisky Exchange 2025, bourbon barrel #239852, 237 btl.)
Nose: sweet and fruity. There’s pineapple on syrup, pears and ripe green melons. Hints of vanilla cream and coconut cream, even a hint of white chocolate. Then heather honey, a light green touch, some lime peelings, lemon oil and hints of almonds. Rich and vibrant.
Mouth: still a lot of fruity notes, both yellow and green. Apples and pears, more citrus zest, grapefruit and hints of gooseberries. Mid-palate it becomes sweeter on vanilla cake, butter biscuits and coconut, leading towards green and slightly bitter nuts, anise and nutmeg. Spiciness and zesty notes are the key elements. Then hints of jasmine tea and fresh oak shavings as well.
Finish: quite long. Grapefruit, vanilla, green spice and some peppery heat.
Quite a seductive Green Spot – the innate fruitiness is highlighted by the bourbon barrel and it offers a lot of intensity. The only downside is the high price: limited Spot editions are never cheap and here you’re also paying extra for the high ABV. Exclusively available from The Whisky Exchange.
