Asta Morris has been fairly quiet lately, wih only a couple of releases this year. All the more reason to investigate Bert’s latest release. This 17 year old Macduff 2006 was officially launched at the Spirits in the Sky festival last weekend and received some good feedback.
Macduff 17 yo 2006 (48%, Asta Morris 2024, refill PX sherry cask, 225 btl.)
Nose: mild PX indeed. There’s some butterscotch and hints of Mexican chocolate, against a background of cinnamon and stewed apples. Light raisin sweetness and over time there are nice hints of ripe apricots too. Later mild oak spice appear, with a bit of caramel and a faint mossy touch as well. Mature whisky that unfolds nicely.
Mouth: same impression – never any sharp edges. The creamy texture stands out, with stewed orchard fruits and a light candied touch on the side. Then more caramelized notes mixed with mild oak spice. Soft hints of pepper and cinnamon, along with candied orange peels.
Finish: quite long, with a bit more wood spice, milk chocolate and caramelized nuts.
The PX cask left a nice creaminess and caramelly side, but it doesn’t overdo it. A good match between a robust spirit and a balanced finish makes this a highly enjoyable whisky at a friendly price. Still available in (Belgian) stores and half of the cask will be available through Gaiaflow in Japan.
