A short intro today: Kirsch Import just released a Glen Grant 2009. It is a selection from Gordon & MacPhail‘s stocks. Now G&M have different styles of Glen Grant in their portfolio, so we’re curious what this refill sherry cask is like.
Glen Grant 14 yo 2009 (56,9%, Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice for Kirsch Import 2024, refill sherry hogshead #900927, 269 btl.)
Nose: starts on toffee, walnut cake and milk chocolate, along with vanilla ice cream and mild wood. Then pepper and light ginger. Raisin sweetness slowly moves towards stewed orchard fruits and baked apple. It shows some of the innate fruitiness of the spirit, but it’s dominated by a very autumnal style of sherry.
Mouth: less my type now. A slightly bloated profile, focusing on roasted walnuts and hazelnuts, more milk chocolate and caramel. Subtle saltiness and clove. Some blackcurrant too, although it’s hardly fruity at this point. Instead there’s a big meatiness to it and a subtle tannic edge. Later also cocoa powder and some rye spice in the distance.
Finish: long and nutty, with drying leafy notes, salt, mocha, burnt caramel and oak spice.
I didn’t expect this very autumnal and even slightly dirty style of sherry in Glen Grant. Overall a bit too meaty for my taste. Now available in different German shops, check Kirsch Import for more information.
