WhiskySponge bottling n°46 is this multi-vintage 27 year old Jura single malt. It is a combination of a 1991 refill barrel and a 1994 refill hogshead, bottled at cask strength. We’ve had quite a lot of these casks lately and most of them were excellent.
Jura 27 yo 1991 + 1994 (52,1%, WhiskySponge 2021, refill barrel + refill hogshead, 334 btl.)
Nose: fruity and vibrant. Pears, yellow plums and lemon peels, mixed with sunflower oil and paraffin. Carbon papers and grease. Walnuts and chamomile tea. Hints of minerals, chalk, wet wool and pebbles too. A lovely old style.
Mouth: a short burst of tart fruits (lime, grapefruit, pears), quickly followed by mint, herbal teas, light resinous notes and more walnuts. Faint mustardy notes and green chlorophyll. Chalky dryness and leather. Leafy notes and dried grass, against a background of coastal notes. It’s never overtly fruity but never too austere either, keeping a nice balance.
Finish: medium, on herbal notes and a green fresh side. Mint, lemon and grass.
Another very fine early 1990s Jura: nicely old-school, significantly different from what the distillery is showing us, and simply worth discovering. Now available from Decadent Drinks.
