Jura 1990 (Artful Dodger)

Jura 1990 (Artful Dodger)

More than enough Jura single malts from independent bottlers these days. Most of them are really nice, old-school whiskies worth checking out. In our glass today is a new single cask bottled by Artful Dodger. While it seems to have been bottled a while ago (based on 1990 + 30 years) it only started to appear in stores just now.

Jura 30 yo 1990 (47,2%, Artful Dodger 2021, bourbon hogshead #9005283)

Nose: such a typical style with old waxed papers, dried wildflowers (Manzanilla) and library dust. Then lots of different oils (Castor oil, sunflower, lamp oil…). Bitter almond. A subtle rough edge of artisan but fairly neutral spirits, like old genever or grappa. After a while some lanolin comes out, as well as subtle hoppy notes.

Mouth: same style, full of resinous / oily notes, now with more ripe garden fruits as well (pears and greengages). Grapefruits and orange peels. The tropical notes we found in some sister casks are noticeable in the background, but slightly subdued. Wet wool, more dusty books, earthy floors and bready notes. Hints of sweet mustard. More aromatic genever.

Finish: long, quite mineral with a certain dry waxiness. Also hay and drops of herbal tea.

Like I said: worth checking out. A great old-school profile that reminds me of old Clynelishes or more exotic malts like Glen Mhor or Banff. It’s rather un-fruity yet charismatic whisky. Available from Artful Dodger direct or from Master of Malt.
