This Springbank 1995 was bottled by the Swedish bottler Svenska Eldvatten. Some time ago, actually, but it’s still around.
Springbank 22 yo 1995
(44,3%, Svenska Eldvatten 2018, refill sherry hogshead #498, 137 btl.)
Nose: quite autumnal, with bruised apples, (chest)nutty notes and wet tobacco. Wet limestone and subtle oily notes in the background. Walnuts, hessian and light mint. Also the typical mustiness of this distillery.
Mouth: even more on oily notes, paraffin, leather, varnished sandalwood and dried Mediterranean herbs. Walnuts and hazelnuts. Bitter oranges. Wet leaves and earthy spice. Meaty touches. Wow. A bit exotic, a bit industrial, a tad musty… 100% Springbank.
Finish: long, still earthy and musty, with mineral notes, a hint of coffee and spice.
This is totally not for beginners, a little demanding and far away from the modern production. Actually it’s much closer to 1950s whisky. Unique. Around € 375, some German shops still have stock.
