Glencadam is not a sexy name – the distillery only bottles 5% as a single malt anyway. Nonetheless I’ve never had one that was really bad.
This Glencadam 19 Year Old was transferred from bourbon casks to Oloroso sherry butts for a finishing period.
Glencadam 19 yo ‘Oloroso Sherry Finish’ (46%, +/- 2018, 6000 btl.)
Nose: malty start, certainly not a sherry bomb. Hints of apricots, golden raisins, juicy oranges and sour plums. A bit of modern oak (hints of coconut and potpourri). Light mocha and hazelnuts after a while.
Mouth: still some juicy orchard fruits, raisins and fruit cake. The spices are more prominent now (pepper, clove). Hints of leather and a slightly strange fragrant / bitterish edge from the wood, kind of a hoppy note.
Finish: medium, on ginger, sour fruits and some green wood.
Quite good again, there’s a nice sweet and sour fruitiness but unfortunately also a green oak side that is quite strong. My favourite is still the Glencadam 21 Year Old which is cheaper as well. Available from TWE or Master of Malt.
