This version of Glen Garioch 12 Years was introduced in 2009 when they switched to a new bottle shape and went to a higher ABV of 48%. The branding is still looking good in my opinion.
The 12 is matured in a mix of bourbon and sherry casks.
Glen Garioch 12 yo
(48%, OB +/- 2018)
Nose: hey, nice. There’s a slightly dusty barley note up front, dried flowers, as well as earthy spices and heather. Hints of beer. All this mixed with a great honeyed fruity side. Apricots, berries, pineapple.
Mouth: a similar mix of creamy fruits (bananas, lemons, green apple) with fresh mineral notes and herbs, with a peppery edge. Hints of raisins and toffee. Subtle leather and charred oak.
Finish: long enough, sweet and spicy.
Really good for a 12 year-old. You get a generous fruitiness but also some old-school minerals and herbs. In the same ballpark as Benromach perhaps, I like this style and I should have discovered it sooner! Recommended. Available from Master of Malt or The Whisky Exchange among others.
Score: 87/100
