Nectar Grove (Wemyss Malts)

Wemyss Malts just released this blended malt whisky called Nectar Grove. Selected Highlands single malts were brought together and further matured in Madeira-seasoned casks for a while. A “finished” blended malt, quite a novel idea.

The ornate packaging is inspired by Portuguese ceramics: Madeira is a Portuguese island.

Nose: nice fruity notes up front, bright and juicy. Nectarines, kiwi and hints of orange oils. A modern vanilla / fresh wood character as well. Plenty of bread crust. A hint of tobacco. Well done.

Mouth: same fresh fruits, but sweeter. Oranges, melons, pink grapefruits, truckloads of peaches and grapes. Also fruit tea – it seems Irish in a way. Now a grainy and nutty side is more noticeable, as well as some gingery oak and a faint cardboard note. A late hint of caramel and latte too.

Finish: not too long, peppery with lingering fruits and toffee.

A really great nose and a bright, sweet fruitiness make this an attractive blended malt. Not perfect but a good daily dram with great value for money. Recommended if you’re looking in the lower price range. Available from Master of Malt for instance.
