Batch 5 of the Blended Scotch Whisky release from That Boutique-y Whisky Company is 50 years of age, no less. It was part of their advent calendar, and the full bottles only arrived much later.
Blended Scotch Whisky #1 50 yo (46,6%, That Boutique-y Whisky Company 2017, Batch #5, 2000 btl.)
Nose: nice balance of old malt and old grains. First up is the coconut / leather combo of the grains, then sherried notes like chocolate and tobacco. Hints of marzipan and berries. Light tropical notes (pink grapefruit).
Mouth: honey, plenty of blackcurrant, as well as rummy notes. Raisins and fruit cake. Then more resinous notes and leather, as well as hints of plum wine and old Brandy de Jerez. A very nice, old character.
Finish: long, with a growing sourness and bitterness now, but mostly ‘indirect’ oak so to speak.
Certainly upgraded by its sherry character, this doesn’t feel like a blend. Complex and very well integrated, recommended. Around € 170, available from Master of Malt.
Score: 89/100
