Dino Mancarella is a German whisky lover who was thinking about bringing out a private bottling for some time. It didn’t happen until he tried this undisclosed Speyside Region 1973 by chance and was sold immediately.

(51,6%, Mancarella 2017, +/- 50 btl.)

Nose: fresh fruits (grapefruits, gooseberries, apricots and lightly tropical notes), very subtle resinous notes, candle wax, lots of mint and herbal honey. Subtle hay and aniseed. Orange peels. Just a hint of blonde tobacco. Complex and elegant. As expected: excellent.

Mouth: same lightly tropical and gently acidulated notes. Kumquats, mirabelles, oranges, green banana, rubbed lemon skins. Hints of walnuts and green tea. Aniseed and ginger. Fresh spearmint. Eucalyptus.

Finish: long, rich, with a little camphor and mint again as well as traces of tropical fruits.

Sure, it’s a private bottling (no public sales) so you’re probably not going to taste it. But it’s excellent and who knows we ever stumble upon the rest of this cask.

I was a bit drunk when I wrote that, so deleted later as I thought the words were too strong. But fine for you to bring it up.

What I was trying to say is there should be a balance between what you find interesting and what your readers find interesting (unless you don’t care about the latter, in which case why would you bother writing a blog).

I assume most people reading would actually be interested in trying the whisky as well. That means a lot of it should be available, which you characterise as “commercialisation”. Fine.

It’s also nice to see the occasional review of a rare, older bottling. But there are (in my opinion) too many reviews on here (and other blogs too) of recently bottled but very exclusive and impossible to buy whisky, which I find frustrating, to put it mildly.

Anyway, that’s just my opinion and sorry for stating it, I wasn’t trying to offend you. I shouldn’t have said anything.

But speaking for myself only: I checked you blog every day for the last few months and the last one I found interesting was Glenfarclas Family Cask from 1986.

I think we agree on the balance, it’s just that if you only like one bottle out of every 100 or so, then I guess we have different tastes altogether. Not sure how listening to the public (whatever that means) is going to solve it. Good luck to you and thanks for the samples we exchanged.
