J&B 20 Years (1960s)

This Justerini & Brooks blend was bottled in the 1960s at 20 years of age. We all know J&B of course, but the brand used to offer more higher-end bottlings at the time. Another well-known version of this 20yo was bottled in square decanters during the 1970s, they are regularly seen in auctions.

Bottled in the 1960s, so the whisky inside should be distilled in the 1940s.

Nose: rather rounded, with brown sugar and dried oranges, toffee and a clear smoky background. Nicely balanced sherry influence (raisins, blackberries). Hints of eucalyptus and herbs. Oriental wood and dusty books. Camphor. Soft hints of turpentine.

Mouth: nice, almost like a very, very old peated whisky that lost most of its power over time. Very smooth, with subtle smoke, soft resinous touches and a malty sweetness behind it. Subtle spices. The balance is excellent.

Finish: not too long but very tasty, mainly on dry malty notes and smoke.

What a great surprise, it’s superbly balanced and the smooth smoky layer (a little bigger than expected perhaps) is a great addition. Thank you, Jens.
